Genesis 1
Every Story Has a Beginning

1.  The Proper Context of Genesis

* Genesis 1 is historical narrative, not poetry or myth (note: E.J. Young quote – Genesis is not poetry; it lacks characteristics of Hebrew poetry and presents a factual account).
* The author intends to convey real events with theological emphasis, distinguishing it from ancient Near Eastern myths.
* The point is theological: the origin of everything and who started the story (God alone).

2. God is the Absolute Creator

* Genesis 1:1 declares that in the beginning God created the heavens and the earth out of nothing .
* God alone is the sole Creator; creation declares His glory and deserves praise

3. Genesis 1 is about Order
* Creation occurs through God's spoken word ("And God said... and it was so"), bringing function and order from chaos (note: Gen 1:2)
* The seven days emphasize divine command; grammar supports literal sequential days, though the primary focus is theological rather than scientific debate.

4. The Pinnacle of Genesis 1 is the Creation of Man

* The sixth day stands out (definite article, "very good") as the pinnacle of creation.

* Mankind is special, we aren’t an accident or here by chance. We are the image of God.

So Now What?

* Live to reflect God's glory: steward gifts/time/relationships faithfully.
* Anchor your identity in God's design against cultural distortions.
