Ephesians 4:1-6
A Worthy Calling

The church, as the epicenter of God’s activity, achieves true unity through the guidance of God and His Spirit, enabling us to fulfill humanity’s purpose of glorifying God by living as witness of His transformative power in our lives.

Fundamentals of Church Unity:

1.  We share a distinct calling (note: v. 1)

  • At the beginning of the story of man, we’re being told that mankind has a duty and a responsibility to God.
  • Mankind like sheep has gone astray to do their own thing and worse to worship their own gods. We want things our way and on our terms.
  • All mankind has the same responsibility to God but a certain subset of mankind has been invited or summoned to something more, something greater.
  • The church’s special assignment is to be a witness of God in both word and deed.

2. We share a way of life (note: v. 2-3)

  • The way that the Church lives matters, because as scripture points out even our actions are an act of witness to the watching world.
  • The unbeliever claims to want proof and evidence of God, but they don’t recognize the way that God has given it.
  • We are called to live as God leads and teaches us through His Spirit, making it clear that the church's difference from the world isn't about being superior, but about being redeemed.

3. We share a set of truths (note: v.4-6 )

     1. One Body

     2. One Spirit

     3. One Hope

     4. One Lord

     5. One Faith

     6. One Baptism

     7. One God and Father

So now what?

  • Strive for true unity that’s only possible through the Spirit. As much as it depends on you, live in unity within the Body of Christ.
