As we’ve unpacked the last couple of weeks, The way we build and maintain relationships serves as a powerful testimony to the world. By living differently from societal norms, we reveal the darkness of the human heart in its unregenerate state.
1. Submission is Mutual (note: v.21)
* Submission is based on our relationship to Christ
* Paul’s important point is that in each of these sets of relationships the one in authority is to be submissive to the needs of those under him and those in submission are to be subject to the authority of the one over him.
2. Mutual Submission operates Differently in Marriage (note: v.22, 25)
* Paul sees that the way relationships play out in the family, as between a husband and a wife as a clear reflection of the nature of the heart that the gospel creates. (note: Colossians 3:18-21; 1 Peter 3:1-3)
* In marriage women acknowledge and come under the authority and leadership of the Husband to guide and lead the family. Husbands are to seek the good and well-being of their wife. In each of these, they seek to honor and glorify God.
3. Successful Marriages Imitate Christ (note: v.22-31)
* Christ is head of the Church
* Christ loves the Church
* Christ sanctifies the Church
* Christ nourishes and cherishes the Church
* Christ becomes one with the Church
So now what?
* Reflect on how your relationships, whether married or single, honor God’s design by showing Christ-like love and submission.
* Then we ask in light of what the Lord desires for me in marriage, how can I improve in how I demonstrate mutual submission in marriage.
