Christ is the victorious and glorious King, giving gifts to those who are his as part of his ascension and exaltation. As part of the celebration the church receives grace seen as spiritual gifts as part of the demonstration of God’s Glory.
1. Christ’s Gifts and Grace (note: v. 7)
- We have all received grace, but in varying degrees. Similarly, everyone has been given gifts, and our diversity stems from receiving different gifts in different measures. (note: 1 Corinthians 12:12-14, 27-28)
- Spiritual gifts are a benefit given to us by the Lord
- Christ is distributing gifts because his glory is on display. He is celebrating his exaltation.
2. Christ’s Ascension and Exaltation (note: v. 8-9)
- Paul see’s Jesus’ ascension as his triumphal march. Because now, it is finished, the work is done, and Jesus is no longer hidden. He is now to be exalted and gets the glory he deserves.
- Jesus defeated four enemies much more threatening, sin, the world, Satan, and death." (note: John 16:8; Revelation 12:12; 1 Corinthians 15:55)
3. Christ’s Sovereignty and Fulfillment (note: v.10)
- Christ sits above all things, filling all things. This is why his church is a global church. There is nowhere that is outside his domain. That’s why his commission was to send us to the ends of the world to extend his kingdom and rule throughout.
- Paul asserts that this prophecy finds its ultimate fulfillment in Christ's ascension. This signals that His second coming will starkly contrast His first: He arrives as the triumphant conqueror, poised to execute judgment on sin and evil.
4. Church Unity
- The varied gifts promote cohesion and maturity in the body of Christ.
So now what?
- Exalt, Proclaim and Glorify the King of Kings and Lord of Lords in all aspects of our Lives.
